Don’s concerned about his mother, who lives alone but has recently experienced some medical issues.
How can his connected home app allow him to stay informed and involved, while still supporting her independence?
research
From prior research, my team created user personas, identifying the felt needs of both Don and his mother.
Since Don’s primary need is simply at-a-glance access, we framed the core experience around Mom’s tablet version of the app.
To capture all user requirements, I consulted with a registered nurse/consultant who also provided training on compatible biometric devices to be paired with the app.
Together we then fleshed out Mom’s medication list and daily routine, to build several user scenarios.
design
I conducted a competitive audit of health trackers, fitness and medication reminder apps. From the most prevalent themes observed, I created three rough wireframe concepts: a dashboard approach, a to-do list and a gameified reward-based version.
testing
Concurrently with an adjacent designer, we resolved how Mom’s Harmony experience would dovetail into Don’s (on his main connected home app). I then prototyped and refined the experiences.
The final design was optimized for legibility, accessibility and convenience on Mom’s tablet.
For Don, there is quick access and visibility from his own connected home app. For the both of them, frequent contact can be maintained via encouraging shared notifications.
