Software connecting industrial workers & their devices, to facility safety oversight

Client: Honeywell

UI DESIGN • DATA VISUALIZATION

With a myriad of potential hazards in a chemical facility, how can a Controller monitor the real-time safety of thousands of workers, spread over hundreds of acres?

research

The product of two legacy apps combined, Sotera’s requirements were many. And the user experience needed to intuitively display real-time location and toxic exposure risk for each worker (whether in close quarters or spread out along a pipeline.) It also had to manage the function & maintenance of an entire gas detector fleet (with several worn per person).

Interviews with safety personnel made clear the needed abilities to ‘see everything, miss nothing, and respond to anything’. This meant a very data-heavy UI but with clear visibility and quick access to vital details of leaks and exposures.

design

The controller’s Dashboard needed to log Events of all levels of severity (from “Bob’s device wasn’t recharged last night” to prolonged hazardous leaks). Finding a data viz solution to best communicate all of these saw me landing on a timeline-based approach. This highlighted not only the urgency & frequency of Events… But also the duration.

When incidents occur at a facility, rapidly pinpointing them plus nearby workers at risk, was also essential. A fullscreen map view was desiged to enable quick, detailed views of affected persons and zones across a property.
